Comparison Chart Key
Brand
Many different manufactures produce seats which meet today’s safety standards. The chart is sorted alphabetically by brand, but you can sort as needed by clicking the columns.
Model
Model names shown may include version numbers. Britax uses “G4” or “G4.1” to note that these are “generation 4” seats which have been updated from generation 3 (G3).
RF Min
This is the Rear Facing minimum weight in pounds. Your infant must be at least this weight to fit properly in the seat.
RF Max
The Rear Facing maximum weight rating in pounds. Since the rear-facing position is the safest, it’s recommended that children ride in this position until at least 2 years of age. Choose a seat with a high rear facing maximum weight rating to allow them to remain in that position longer.
FF Max
The maximum weight the seat can be used Forward Facing, in inches. Once your child outgrows this weight rating, it will be necessary to move on to a booster seat.
Ht Max
The maximum height of a child who fits in the seat. For taller children, or to remain in a convertible seat longer before moving on to a booster, choose a seat with a higher height limit.
Seat Wt
The total weight of the car seat in pounds. Lighter seats can be easier to transport, so they are good for traveling and moving between different vehicles.
Depth
The front to back length of the seat in inches. Keep in mind this rating measures the seat in its most upright position. When reclined, the seat will take up more space in the car, especially in seats with a tall height measurement.
Width
How wide the car seat is in inches. Narrower seats will occupy less seat space. This is helpful in compact cars to allow other passengers to sit comfortably in the back seat. If you’ll be installing two or three car seats along your back seat, choosing a narrow seat will ensure a proper fit even in smaller cars.
Height
How tall the seat is, in inches. Some seats may extend beyond this measurement when adjusted for taller children.
Expiration
The number of years after manufacture that a seat can be used. All car seats are rated with an expiration date since the protective materials wear out over time. Choosing a seat with a longer expiration date is helpful when using the seat from newborn until the seat is outgrown, or for using the seat for a second toddler when the first outgrows it.
Price
Rated on a dollar-sign scale of 1 to 5. The cheapest seats ($) are below $70. The most expensive ($$$$$) are $300 and above.
